My name is Lori Ennis Eckles. My father, Clarence Ennis was 95 years old and has been fighting cancer for 4 years. In October we moved him from our home to an assisted care facility in Riverview, MI. During that stay he gradually became worse. I decided he needed to be moved to a facility with less tenants to get more attention and better care. On December 24, 2021, I called Mr. Kevin Cunningham, owner of Cunningham’s Trenton Senior Living, 3321 Brookshire St., Trenton MI. 48183. I asked him if they had an opening for my father. I was told a patient had just passed away and they could have a room available in a week. I was told by Mr. Cunningham that I needed to come in and give them a deposit to hold the room. I went in that day and gave them a check for $1,000. I was told at that time that the down payment was non-refundable. There was no written contract signed at that time. On Tuesday, December 28th, my father took a dramatic turn for the worse and I could see he would not be able to be moved. I tested Mr. Cunningham that day and told him that he was not going to be able to come to his facility. I did not hear back from him so I called him on the 29th to let him know. He said OK, but you will not get your down payment back. I could not believe what he said but did not respond. On December 31st, my father died. On January 2nd, I called Mr. Cunningham again to let him know and wanted for him to return my down payment. He just said no and that was that. I cannot understand the actions of Mr. Cunningham especially during a very difficult time in my life. I also cannot believe there is not a grace period for situations like this. This is just not right and I want everyone to know what this man has done to me.
