If you are reading this review, consider yourself lucky - you are looking into one of the best care places, period! I served as my wife's primary caregiver for 15+ years following her early Alzheimer's Diagnosis. We were advised by our attorney that an Alzheimer's patient will likely need care beyond what can be provided at home, he was right. 14 years later, my wife was unable to move around our home and it was time to follow his advice. He told me, nursing homes and memory care facilities are not for dementia patients. He described the short comings of institutional settings and the needs of a dementia patient, the need to be part of a home-like setting that was like a home. He advised us adult group homes have a home-like feel and are comforting and familiar to their residents. He was right; he was also correct that adult group homes are properly priced. More affordable than larger institutions. I reviewed 10 group home before selecting Ideal Senior Living and the prices ranged greatly. Ideal was neither the highest or the lowest. It was after talking with Romelia when I found her philosophy of taking good care of staff to ensure competent and committed individuals work with her. Owner and staff that share her and my values. Quality might cost a bit more than the bottom-priced facility - but its easy to agree, care of any loved one, is not a place to seek out the low-cost option. Ideal has the best environment, wooded setting, lots of windows and views of the beauty that surround the place. If you've visited, you know what I'm talking about. Never mind all the colorful flowers, birds and fresh vegetables harvested from their garden! It is beautiful environment perfect for people that need a peaceful and serene setting. Staff you want to know about? Absolutely wonderful and well qualified. My experience as a caregiver was limited to care of my wife one patient - I did the best I could, but every stage brought new challenges and things to learn. Ideal Senior Living's staff are mature, having years, if not decades of experience. They knew how to care for my wife and all of the home's residents from my view. They are proactive, always at the ready when conditions changed. They are committed to the residents, caring and wonderful people. I considered all of them friends, not workers. Safety and cleanliness - top rated. Look around, I dare you to find anything soiled. Everything is cleaned all day, everyday! and the staff carefully assist residents while they can walk and move them gently with love once that ability wanes. Meals, always freshly prepared, except the guys' favorite "Pizza Night"! I would visit daily and feed my wife her dinner. Hate to say this, but I was jealous. Meals always looked, and smelled so good. For me it was great to know the healthy, fresh nutritious foods was always available. As her ability to chew and swallow changed, staff never blinked, they properly prepared the food whether it be cutting into small bite-sized pieces or pureeing things when chewing was no longer possible. Sorry for the lengthy review, but there are so many great things to share. Unfortunately, my wife passed away a few weeks back. I miss her daily, but felt it important to provide a clear view of Ideal Senior Living. Dan and Romelia and their team are the people, in the place, you want to trust your family member to, that I'm sure of. Good luck with you decision from a former family member of a resident at Ideal Senior Living that will be forever grateful for the wonderful care my wife received while at Ideal Senior Living!
Ideal Senior Living offers a real HOME for your loved one. My husband Frank has been a resident for five years. The care and support he gets from the staff, including caregivers and housekeeper/cook and the owners Dan and Romelia, is unsurpassed. There is real love and concern present. Interaction is fundamental to his quality of life. A therapist comes twice a week and provides not only physical activity but mental stimulation with games and music. Each individual room is absolutely clean and odor free and beuatifully decorated. The property itself itself is stunning and offers outdoor enjoyment with beehives that provide honey, a chicken coop which provides fresh eggs daily, and a garden that produces many vergetables for consumption. Frank is unable to communicate well, but he will tell you that he is "very happy" at Ideal Senior Living.
My husband has been at Ideal for three week and I couldn't be happier with his care. Dan and Romelia are wonderful and caring people and the care givers are excellent. Lisa and Michelle are so caring and patient. He is content. It was a hard decision but I made the right one for him
Beyond all expectations
My Father in Law was staying at Ideal Senior Living, but unfortunately he passed recently . My wife and I dealt with his decline over the last three years at multiple adult care organizations. I felt compelled to share some of our experiences with others who will follow in our footsteps. We originally had him in a brand new large senior care facility that was beautiful, but they lacked the ability and employees to properly care for my Father in Law (this seems to be a common issue with many facilities). We moved him into Ideal Senior Living last June and our experience with this organization has been fantastic. Yes, the facility is beautiful, super clean and the meals are great, but more importantly the care my Father in Law received was exceptional. He was treated with truly loving care from ALL the employees and was able to live his last days in peace. I think it is also important to point out that Romelia and her team treated my Father in Law in such a way to allow him to gain back his self respect and dignity before he passed. God Bless all the great people at Ideal Senior Care that made that happen. Mark Griffiths
Place is outstanding!
I think the care at Ideal Senior Living is excellent. It's a residential home, and there are only 6 patients. There are 2 ladies that live in the lower level. They're from Jamaica, so you always have the consistency of the same people there. They're very pleasant, and they're very cheerful. Then there's a cook who is from Armenia that comes in 6 days a week and does the cooking. When I'm there, I see them out in the kitchen, getting food ready, or helping a patient. I hear them giggling and laughing; they're very happy people. They're consistent because they're the same people, so the patients already got to know them. The place is very clean and when you go in. You always take your shoes off at the door. They want you to go and wash your hands, or they have alcohol right there to wash your hands. They have hardwood floors. Every day someone's washing those floors, so it's more than clean. They also clean the bathrooms well. I think cleanliness is one of the really big things there, although that may happen in other places. The food isn't really fancy, and it's served on a single plate, like a nine-inch plate. There's a lot of food. My husband's kind of a big eater and I always say, "Did you get enough?" He says yes, and that the food is really good. He's very content there. He says they make rice with mixed vegetables and a chicken leg, a 2-piece chicken thing, and then a desert. I have a sister who lives in another senior living, and their meals are very gourmet, very fancy, and very elegant. The meals at Ideal Senior Living are not presented like that, but it is the kind of food that my husband likes. It's not family-style because it's not like common dishes on the table, but it's more like the food that he probably would have eaten at home over the years. I don't really see any problems with anything. They wash the clothes, and they take good care of everything. Today I was over there and they had a lady come in and she was like a recreational therapist of a hospital before she retired. She comes in and she plays games. They have fly swatters and balloons. Then they'll play Trivial Pursuit. Then she might play some music and the residents guess what the music is. It's more of the oldies' stuff, just so the people have fun. Those of us visiting also participate and have fun. There are not a lot of people because one is in hospice and one had a stroke. It's not like a lot of people. Between the patients, it works out very well. The only problem is just, it's a little bit far. It's 28 minutes for me to drive, and that's the part that I don't like. I wish there was something like that in the Troy area. My husband is there for assisted living, but there are patients there who need memory care. They have some hospice patients from time to time. If it's dialysis, they don't take them since they don't do medical care. If they have some memory issues, they'll take care of them. The staff is very pleasant and always hard-working. Sometimes he needs help getting lowered to the toilet or getting off the toilet; they help him. He always looks clean-shaven and bathed. His clothes always look clean and fresh, so they take very good care of him. He gets nightmares sometimes, and they come in and help him calm down. They're right there for him. The food has a good flavor, and it seems to always be enough. In the morning, they may make an omelet with mushrooms or sausage in it. He might have pancakes, orange juice, prune juice (if he needs it), and even coffee. Sometimes he has a little bowl of cut-up tangerine, oranges or something like that. It seems to be nutritious from my observation, and it looks like it's fresh, so it's good. There are 2 rooms in the home that are smaller, and that's where they had the hospice patients because they're not getting in and out of bed. They're in bed almost all the time other than if they have to lift them. Every day, they try to bring them out into the family room or the living room. They would get them moved, cleaned up, and feed them according to what they would eat. My husband's room is not huge. It's probably a little bit bigger than a dormitory room, but it's lovely. It's perfect for him. He seems content with the good lighting and good windows. My husband moved in December, and they didn't have as much then for Christmas when normally they have a Christmas party with Santa and all. Some of it was COVID-related. On Mondays and Wednesdays at 3, they have this recreational therapist who comes in for an hour. On Thursdays, they have an artist come in and they paint on a canvas. I was even there as a visitor and they said I can paint, so I painted a picture. They have those activities. The therapists also do gentle exercises, but that's just two days a week. My husband also walks around the house with a walker to try to get some walking exercise in. I think the activities are good. I thought the price was very high. Considering what I've learned from the other places, it's actually much better.
I am so very grateful that my mother resided at Thrive. The care she received was excellent. Most importantly, my mother was treated with sincere kindness and respect. Even when someone cannot communicate verbally, they know kindness and love. The caregivers had been absolutely wonderful to my mother in aspects of care.
