My father has lived at Lockwood for about a month now, and I researched places in the area when his need to move arose. Lockwood is a beautiful, new (<2 years old as I write this) facility with lots to recommend it. As an independent living building, the overall environment is bright, open, and modern unlike many assisted living places that have a more institutional feel. The apartments have 9-foot ceilings and plenty of light from sliding doors and large windows. The kitchens are modern with a good array of safety features (e.g. burners that turn off when you lift a pan from them, in case…
The kitchens are modern with a good array of safety features (e.g. burners that turn off when you lift a pan from them, in case somebody forgets to turn the knob completely). Having eaten a couple of meals there myself, I would say the food is above average. It won't knock Bobby Flay off the Food Network, but it is better than most similar places I have been. And the flexibility of the menu is excellent, with dozens of standbys that residents can choose to have if they don't like the day's offering. Outside the apartment and food, there is plenty to do. The community garden is well appointed. Sitting and walking areas outside are very pleasant. The exercise and movie rooms are quite nice, and the twice-weekly happy hour in the bistro is a wonderful added touch that promotes social interaction. Another nice thing about Lockwood is its location. I counted at least 3 bus lines that run past the front of the facility, with a stop just steps away from the front door. That makes it convenient to public transportation in addition to the ample resident parking for those who drive. Finally, I have found the staff to be helpful and responsive. If I had one niggle to complain about, it would be that the front desk is not staffed on weekends. But overall the folks in the dining area have been very nice and helpful, the front desk quite informative, and I should note that there are even companies that visit for in-home physical therapy and healthcare, all of which have been excellent thus far. So it is early days for me regarding my dad's experience there, but I am quite pleased with the place and it has certainly eased my mind to have him living there.
Have you ever moved into a new community where you immediately felt welcomed? Well, that’s the way I felt at Lockwood Ann Arbor, moving in ten months ago. The welcome expands to newcomers as well, and the opportunities to spend time together and enrich life with activities to enhance physical, emotional, and spiritual growth abound. The staff is very responsive and available to address issues needing attention. Plus the views of the sky are stunning!
Apartments lack insulation - you hear everything - the hallway, outside patios, apartments above/below and next to you. If a 3-hour run of a dishwasher occurs, it’s like it’s in your apartment - after 10 pm dishwashers started. Same for washer/dryer located in your bedroom. If it’s run after 10 pm, you’re not sleeping - which happens and Lockwood can only tell the offending apartment to stop - they don’t!!! It sounds like a tornado during spin cycle. I’ve had it started after midnight by the apt above me - (80-year old). TV’s are loud cause residents are HOH/deaf without hearing aids. Again,…

I’ve had it started after midnight by the apt above me - (80-year old). TV’s are loud cause residents are HOH/deaf without hearing aids. Again, after 10 pm, it’s difficult to sleep with the noise. I hear toilets flushing above. Voices are loud cause residents are HOH/deaf. Dogs defecate on the lawn right by your apartment patio. No assigned parking so residents fight over close parking spaces. Residents leave dog poo on the hallway carpeting. Lockwood is replacing hallway carpeting now. Opened August 2024 rent increase June 2025
By far the rudest staff I've ever dealt with. Do yourself a favor and consider other options.
Beautiful place!
